This gentleman survived 29 mission over Europe as a Rear Gunner on a Lancaster Bomber.
On the way home one night, he said “an enemy fighter plane came up behind him & a bit to the side, it was only a few feet away.” I said what did you do next ?
He said “I saluted the pilot and he saluted me back.”
Then after some very long seconds, he flew away.
